How To Stop Online Shopping For Fun

I got a comment or email about this topic once and I hadn’t even thought on writing on it before but I’m kind of ashamed to admit that. Online shopping is one of the biggest ways we spend our money and it’s just going to get bigger. Amazon is practically taking over the world and now fast free shipping is becoming more normal.

So today I’m dedicating a whole post to this topic in order to help those that need to quit the habit of online shopping just for fun.

Let’s get into it!

How To Stop Online Shopping For Fun

1. Set a timer.

Instead of mindlessly perusing for hours at a time set a timer when you are looking for something online. If you are just looking for some ideas, price checking or inspiration then when the timer is up let yourself be done for awhile. If you are on the hunt for something specific and haven’t found it yet restart the timer.

You may think what is the point of a timer if you restart it. But even if you have to restart the timer it still goes off that first time taking you out of the vortex that is the online shopping world and back to reality where bills need to be paid and goals are not going to reach themselves!

2. Set a budgeted amount.

I mean this is pretty much a given is it not friends? But I’ll add it anyway for any first time readers. You of course should have a budget over all, but especially for online shopping. You’ll need to take all costs into account. If there is shipping charges that item’s price just went up. Don’t get fooled by the “free item you just pay shipping” method. Make sure you have a budget and you stick to it!

3. Have a list of what you actually need to buy and no more.

Similar to the last point make sure you have a list of what you need exactly and then stick to it. It is easy to get sucked in farther and farther into “similar items” or “other people who bought this also bought this”. You don’t care about other people, stick to what you need, for the price you can afford. Don’t buy extra things just because you are on the site and already buying something else. “IT’S A TRAP” *said in star wars voice*

4. Take a break and come back to your cart.

I saved the best for last! Perhaps the most important tip. Once you’ve found your item, put it in your cart and then step away from your computer. Let it simmer in the cart for a bit and make sure it’s exactly what you want or need.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever fell victim to ordering something and then realizing later you made a mistake. Avoid that mistake by taking a break and stepping away from it for a little bit. Even a few minutes can make a difference, but take longer if you can. Time will almost always give you better judgement and help you from making spontaneous purchases that you don’t need!

I know how amazing Amazon is and online shopping can save you money and time in a lot of different ways. But it can also steal more money and time than you think. Be prepared and use these tips to make your online shopping successful and within your budget!
